How to make career transition a success!

Whether you are starting a new job, changing career focus, or embarking on a new challenge in your current job, the task ahead can seem overwhelming and scary!

Several years ago, when covering this topic for an article I was writing, I had the privilege of sitting down with an expert on the matter.

Richard Spires, Chief Executive Officer at Learning Tree International, shared his advice on how to transition into a new role or career.

For context, Richard’s track record includes a continued pattern of success in helping organizations address and overcome obstacles to meet their goals. Richard is also an effective leader with high integrity and a proven ability to transform organizations. When I asked him about the mindset for starting something new, he stated, “Whether it’s a career or learning something new in your personal life, it’s about having the right mindset. We all have fears. A lot of it is [about] overcoming those fears. It’s also about being humble, recognizing I’m a neophyte and I’m here to learn. Learn the basics, build from that. Be willing to put in the time to get there,” says Spires.

{"I’m a neophyte and I’m here to learn"}

When asked about setting timeline goals and expectations for yourself, Spires shared, “Setting bars for yourself in a limited time frame can be dangerous, and a setup for disappointment. Be aggressive and learn quickly, but give yourself a tactical 90 day plan. Ask yourself, ‘What do I expect to do in the first 90 days?’ ‘What am I going to learn?’ Then after 90 days, maybe 6 months, [you can ask] what does that next year look like?”

Richard Spires had these last words for those embarking on a career change.

“If you are going into something brand new, I’d step back and say ‘is this something I’m passionate about?’ I have found in my career, if you really [are passionate] for something, then you are going to be better off in the long-term.”
