Whether you are starting a new job, changing career focus, or embarking on a new business venture, the task ahead can seem overwhelming and scary!

A few years ago, I had the privilege of sitting down with Richard Spires, CEO and Director, Learning Tree International, in a discussion on how to transition into a new role or career. 

  • Chief Information Officer (CIO) of two of the largest federal government agencies

  • Recognized change agent for large organizations

  • Author of acclaimed book on supporting those in the technology field

  • CEO of the one of the leading IT training companies

  • Entrepreneur involved in multiple successful start-ups

“Whether it’s a career or learning something new in your personal life, it’s about having the right mindset. We all have fears. A lot of it is [about] overcoming those fears. It’s also about being humble, recognizing I’m a neophyte and I’m here to learn. Learn the basics, build from that. Be willing to put in the time to get there,” says Spires.

When asked about setting timeline goals and expectations for yourself, here’s what Richard had to say: “Setting bars for yourself in a limited time frame can be dangerous, and a setup for disappointment. Be aggressive and learn quickly, but give yourself a tactical 90 day plan. Ask yourself, ‘What do I expect to do in the first 90 days?’ ‘What am I going to learn?’ Then after 90 days, maybe 6 months, [you can ask] what does that next year look like?”

Richard Spires had these last words for those embarking on a career change.

“If you are going into something brand new, I’d step back and say ‘Is this something I’m passionate about?’ I have found in my career, if you really [are passionate] for something, then you are going to be better off in the long-term.”
